British Cross Challenge and European Cross Country Championship Trials, Sefton Park, Liverpool
Saturday 26th November
Videos loaded !
TAC had 22 runners in five of the races, with thirteen starting the men's race. The under 20 and senior races were trials for the Great Britain teams for the European Championships, on 11th December, in Sardinia, Italy. GB take u20, u23 and senior teams to the championships.
Phoebe Barker had a superb race to place 9th overall in the combined u17/20 women's race and was third under 17 home. Phoebe was just six seconds away from a top six slot, which may have given her a chance of GB selection. However, hopefully an international call up will not be too far away.
Tom Holden will hope to gain an England team selection, having placed 10th in the under 20 mens race.
It was good to see two TAC senior ladies competing towards the front of such a strong race, as Ashley Gibson and Nicole Taylor placed 36th and 42nd. Nicole was 12th of the under 23s.
The senior men's race was a ferocious battle and for the first time in a while could be called truly world class at the front. Olympic 5000m sixth placer Andrew Butchart won. The TAC squad had a mixed bag of results, with the three travelling back from the USA in the week finding it tough. However, Chris Olley 21st, James West 25th and Corey De'Ath 32nd all had terrific races and were 5th, 7th and 9th of the under 23s.
Unfortunately, Chris Olley has only been named as first reserve for the GB team, so missed out by one second.

Aldershot Farnham and District Tragedy, Tuesday 8th November
I am writing to you all with a heavy heart after hearing of the tragedy that happened last night at Aldershot Farnham and District's training night.
The distance running group had been on their warm up run and were crossing at the traffic lights, opposite the fields where Aldershot have trained for years. A car tragically hit two of the Aldershot girls and killed them.
Many parents, coaches and other athletes were present and our thoughts are with the Aldershot club. I have messaged and spoken with a few there already and they have explained the nightmare.
The girls killed were Lucy Pygott and Stacey Burrows, both in the under 17 age group. Lucy had anchored the Aldershot girls team on Saturday at Mansfield, taking them from third to a victory, whilst Stacey anchored their B team.
At Tonbridge we take great care to try and keep everyone as safe as possible, but despite this we still rely on all runners, of all ages, being cautious.
Below is something that I have circulated before and I would really like everyone to read it again.
Please do all you can to stay safe in memory of Lucy and Stacey. This means both at TAC and in your own training.
Having said all of that, as one parent has already said to me, we should not be fearful, just sensible.
I am sure that you will all join me in offering our thoughts to all our friends at Aldershot.
Mark

Ben Reynolds follows up his gold medal at 5000 metres, with a 10,000 metres silver
Ben Reynolds followed up his gold medal over 5000m to take silver in the over 50s, 10,000m. His time of 33.19.16 was just six seconds away from the winner from Kenya.
You can read Ben's report in the file below, which I think shows his competitiveness is still burning brightly and is why he can still race at such a high standard.

Winter 2016/17 parkrun Grand Prix - update 1, after 22nd October event
The Winter TAC Age Graded Parkrun Grand Prix got underway on Saturday and Sophie Slack (age 10) and Andrew Mercer (M40) continued to battle it out at the top, however Toby Emm U15, Olukorede Fasina and Anne Brenchley W70 all ran PB’s to add 5 points to their score and take early top 3 places (you can only have one PB bonus in the winter series). It is great to see competition between athletes aged 10 and 70+

It was the first National Championships of the year and I think most came away encouraged by how competitive the TAC teams were, taking three bronze medals and placing fourth in the senior mens race.
Senior Men
It was a frustrating experience, as Corey De'Ath struggled once again on the first leg, coming home in 30th, which left the rest of the team a mountain to climb, if they were to repeat last year's victory. After the first leg we were 73s down and at the end were 4th and just 37s behind the winners Cardiff. The support almost everyone gave Corey was superb and its that team spirit that has seen us get to a stage where we are disappointed with a 4th place. Infact the team as a whole ran 55s faster than last year's winning time. George Duggan ran the fastest ever stage for TAC on this course
Senior Women
The team was hit by illness to two runners the day before, but it was positive that we were still able to complete a team for only the third ever time. Nicole Taylor ran the fastest ever TAC lap of 14.55, which was 20s faster than two years ago.
Under 17 Men
A bronze medal might not have been expected before the day, but we were actually leading going into the final leg. James Puxty ran 11.42, which was the fastest lap of the day and went third on the TAC all time list (you can see previous stats under history). The impressive stat here was that we had the first C and D teams home, demonstrating the good depth in this age group.
Under 17 Women
TAC didn't have a team in this event, which was the first time that we havent fielded a squad in one of the six young athletes races for ten years.
Under 15 Boys
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day was the performance from our under 15 boys of James Kingston, Toby Emm and Fraser Gordon. They each ran almost half a minute quicker than I anticipated to take the bronze medals.
Under 15 Girls
Like the Under 17 men this is a good squad in depth and we had a bunch running similar times. The 11th place by the A team, equalled the best TAC placing this century, whilst Katie Goodge's 14.06 was the quickest ever by a TAC runner.
Under 13 Boys
A very solid performance by all three of our runners to win the bronze medals, which were our first medals in this race for four years.
Under 13 Girls
The attitude of our girls in the under 13s is excellent and they finished 16th from 70 starting teams.

Fantasy XL Launch Blog
What is Fantasy XL league? That seems to be the question on everyone’s mind as Cross Country Season looms.
Well it is four things:
This is for athletes as well as friends and family, there is no limit, the more the merrier.
There is a list of “seeded” athletes published on the Fantasy XL tab on tacdistancerunners.com together with their prices. All athletes not listed are priced at £1m. You should note that there are more athletes priced at £1m than all the others combined. Don’t be disheartened if you are low priced or not shown on the list, it is an opportunity, because you are potentially a bargain buy for an ambitious team manager. There is a prize at the end of the season for the athlete with the best average i.e. points per million, so low priced athletes potentially have an advantage. There will inevitably be lots of debate over the seeded athletes’ pricing and whether or not there are athletes who should be on the list but are not, but again this presents opportunities for the astute observer to profit from bargains. Highly priced athletes have a challenge to prove themselves worthy of their high prices.
You first need to choose a team of 6 with one athlete from each age group. This team goes into the A Team Competition. Once you have done this you can select additional teams with no age group constraint i.e. you could choose any combination of athletes regardless of age. These additional teams can be either 6 athlete teams or 12 athlete teams and will be entered into the B Team and C Team competitions respectively. My recommendation is to go for one of each, which will cost you £10, a bargain when you think of all the fun you will have throughout the year. You may only spend up to £40m on each team, with any unused money being translated into points at the rate of 50 points per million.
Points are awarded according to the rules which are set out on the Fantasy XL tab. Essentially there are 10 qualifying races throughout the season with points awarded based on turning up to run enough times, race place, race ranking compared to other TAC athletes and any medal winning performances.
So research your athletes, fill in the entry form (also on the Fantasy XL tab) and return to James Taylor together with payment and then prepare for the fun. The closing date is 15 October, the day of the first qualifying race, so don’t delay.

What is Fantasy XL league? That seems to be the question on everyone’s mind as Cross Country Season looms.
Well it is four things:
- It is a fund raising effort for the club. If 100 people enter 3 teams each we raise £1000 (before prizes).
- It is a way athletes can measure their performance over the season. Each XC race is different, times are not really comparable, so collecting Fantasy XC points provides some measure of how you are doing.
- It is a team building exercise, once you have picked your team across the age groups you will develop an interest in other races apart from your own, encourage your athletes to take part and cheer them on in the races. The TAC team spirit is often commented on by people from other clubs and this is a way to enhance it.
- Finally it is a bit of fun, last year there was lots of banter and good natured competitiveness between team managers as the season ebbed and flowed. There is also competition for who can choose the most cringe worthy team name.

TAC Summer parkrun Grand Prix - completed
The final event of the Summer Grand Prix took place at Tonbridge on 17th September. Here is Mark Pitcairn-Knowles summary. The full results are on the parkrun page.
Sophie Slack had a 16 point advantage over Andrew Mercer (lowest score 14 to discard) and as it turned out the winning score, with a PB, was 31 points, this would have given Andrew victory by 1 point, if neither Sophie or Lily had run! Unfortunately for Andrew (3rd overall) he is injured and it was Sophie who scored the 31 points to extend her score to 107, with her 4th scoring PB run and take the Park Run GP title following on from her winter success. Lily Slack has been close behind her sister throughout and in fact it was only her relatively less good first race when she did not run a PB that resulted in her being 8 points adrift, such was the standard set by Sophie.
There were a number of PB’s, but I think Anne Brenchley’s (W70) has to be mentioned as we all know it is harder to run a PB as you get older.
The summer GP series saw 77 TAC runners register a score. Any ideas on changes to the scoring system for the Winter Series etc please contact Mark Pitcairn-Knowles.

Saturday parkrun news, 17th September
George Duggan equalled the fastest ever parkrun by a TAC athlete, at Maidstone, where he ran 15.03. This was the same time as Chris Olley set at Fulham Palace in December. Both Harry Brown and Luke Reeves ran to finish 4th and 5th in 17.58 and 18.16. For Harry this was his first time under 18 minutes.
Jamie Goodge was first home at the Tunbridge Wells parkrun in 16.54, ahead of Dan Bradley. Katie Goodge also took a fair bit from her pb with 20.17 and was first female home.
At Lullingstone James Puxty was 1st home in 18.12, whilst his sister Steph was first female with 22.57. Stephs time beat the fastest TAC female time on this tough course.

Blackheath and Bromley Harriers, Will Bolton Memorial Relays, at West Wickham, Saturday 10th September
Videos loaded !
In total we had about 80 runners taking part across the races and despite the wet weather at times, the team spirit and all round effort was superb. Those making their TAC debuts were particularly good, as it can be a daunting time for juniors in that situation. I hope that you all enjoyed being part of the TAC squad and thanks for giving it a go.
The senior relay provided both a good battle in the men's and women's categories. The Tonbridge senior mens A team were matched up against their under 20 counterparts and a race long tussle ensued. James Puxty, as an under 17, was brought into the senior team on leg 1 and came hope in 2nd after Blackheath. Jamie Goodge was not far down for the TAC under 20s. Meanwhile Nicole Taylor stormed around the first leg and no doubt ran the fastest ladies lap.
On leg 2 Corey De'Ath hit the front for the seniors and George Duggan moved the u20s into second, before Kieran Reilly and Ally Kinloch (u20) went on leg 3. Ally closed Kieran down, but it was good to see the latter back racing, after a very difficult year. It was nip and tuck at the last changeover, as Julian Rendall and Stuart Brown set off. Stuart had one of his good days and finished strongly to give the u20s a win by only around ten seconds. The win meant that TAC retain the trophy won the last seven years now.
Meanwhile Lucy Thompson, Kiri Marsh and Maria Heslop helped TAC to second behind Blackheath in the women's contest.
Corey De'Ath ran the fastest lap of the race in 12.39 with George Duggan at 12.40. Nicole Taylor ran the fastest ladies lap with 14.37.
The earlier Junior race for u13s and u15s also provided good competition and the TAC u15 boys and girls both won, with I believe the u13 boys also being first.
