On Saturday evening there were two significant nights of 5000 metre races on, one at Nottingham and one at Milton Keynes. The latter featured the England Athletics Championships for men and women.

Lucy herself, coming back from injury, had her first track outing of the season to finish 12th in 16.30.40.
There was also an impressive run from Dom Brown, making his 5000m debut on the track, where he finished 8th in the men's race, in 14.06.22. This moves Dom straight in at number eight on the TAC all time list.

Watford Open Meeting, Wednesday 25th July 2019

There were just a couple of TAC distance runners in action at Watford.
Will Beeston (u20) made his debut at the distance with 8.48.34 and Luke Fisher improved his pb to 9.02.17, which was a 13.5s improvement.
The Watford opens have changed from the 'old days' as entries on the night are not now possible and online entries limited. This has not only reduced the number of runners, but means that the standard at the sharp end is a bit lower than in the past.

Anniversary Games, Sunday 21st July - James West
Mile in 3.56.79
James West raced the Emsley Carr Mile at the Anniversary Games on Sunday, at the London Olympic Stadium.
It shows how far he has come when disappointed with how he felt yet running 3.56.79 ! However, it was more the fact that two or three British rivals beat him, who he would have hoped to finish ahead of.
Having said that James only returned from USA earlier in the week and some adjustment is probably needed to feel at your best.
His time is ranked 67th on the British All Time List and for you old timers out there ahead of the likes of Ian McCafferty, Dave Clarke, Derek Ibbotson, Ian Stewart, Nick Rose etc
Having said that its still not a TAC club record, as that belongs to Andy Graffin at 3.55.42 set in 2001.

Stumptown Twilight Meeting, Portland, USA, Friday 19th July
Chris Olley won section 2 of the men's 1500 metres in Portland on Friday evening with a new personal best of 3.43.85.
Initially he was disappointed not to get into section, which was won by the reigning Olympic Champion, Matt Centrowitz in 3.39.08, but it turned out well and it was four seconds quicker than he had run this season.
Currently Chris is in the USA waiting to start work, post college, in San Francisco. This could be his last track race of the Summer, as there are so few races in the States at this time of the year and paperwork prevents him leaving and returning to start work in August. His immediate plans are a bit undecided, although at this stage competing in the British Championships looks unlikely.
Chris's time keeps him in 8th on the TAC all time 1500m list and moves him into the UK's top 30 this year.

Some of the TAC squad at Staplehurst on Sunday morning
Southern Athletics League, at Tonbridge, Saturday 13th July
Videos loaded !
TAC won the match and there were some excellent performances from the distance running squad, which filled every gap.
Full results are on the Results 2019 page.
It was good to see some of the distance runners making their debuts at certain events, plus setting pbs and season bests.
800m
The men's race was a good quality one with Kieran Reilly 2nd in 1.54.2, followed by Charlie Crick and a pb of 1.55.2. Both Will Beeston (2.01.1) and Adam Roeder (2.11.9) set pbs as non scorers. Annabel Carter (2.23.9) and Tilly Hall (2.26.7) ran the women's event.
1500m
Ally Kinloch looked good in winning with Fraser Gordon (4.04.3) pretty much equalling his pb. Teniqua Gomez (5.07.7 pb), Jacqui O'Reilly (5.12.7 sb) and Lucy Thompson (debut and not sure how she has managed to avoid doing one for all these years) all ran well.
3000/5000m
It was pretty warm during the distance races, but good to see James Price and Sasha Humphries making their debuts at the distances of 3000m and 5000m respectively.
Steeplechases
Noémie Thomson won the women's convincingly, whilst the men's was a ding dong battle between three runners, including Tom Cox and Luke Hooper (debut)
Mixed 4x400m relay
Ben Murphy (48.8) and Charlie Crick (51.7) helped set a club record in the mixed relay, which is new this year.

Sunset Tour Meeting, Azusa, near Los Angeles, USA, Tuesday 9th July
Chris Olley 13.40 5000m and James West 3.37 1500m !
It was great to see two Tonbridge athletes line up in fields surrounded by some world class runners.
First up was James West in heat 1 of the elite men's 1500 metres and finishing 3rd in 3.37.78. The race didn't pan out quite as was hoped, as the target was the Olympic qualifying time of 3.35 and James will be frustrated. However, he mixed it with some top runners and did nudge Nick Willis a two time Olympic medal winner into fourth.
Then came the men's 5000 metres with Chris Olley and watching the race live I was worried at 3k, as he was off the back of the main field and looked to be struggling. However, he had paced it perfectly and was overtaking plenty of others in the final stages to finish 16th of 32 starters. His time of 13.40.35 was a personal best by 7.6s, which lifts him one place in the Tonbridge all time list to second behind Mark Scrutton's club record of 13.32.20, but now ahead of Allen Graffin at 13.41.42.
Chris will move to 6th on the current UK rankings.

Kent Young Athletes League at Ashford, Sunday 7th July
Results are on the Results 2019 page, including a summary for the distance runners. There were 10 racing and 6 ran pbs plus 2 made their event debuts.
I am going to mention Florence Hopkins in the under 13 girls' 1200m, as I noticed her battle around in the recent development meeting, to finish last in the mile (in race 2 of 3 in error, instead of the easiest race). However, she was back in action on Sunday making her debut at 1200m and beating people. So well done Flo for setting an example to many others ! (Hope she won't mind the mention)
Added to this some of the young athletes who ran their pbs have had struggles with form and it's always good to see people come through and run at their best once again.

UK Endurance Conference, Sunday 7th July, Kingston University - Ross Murray talk.
I took some notes from Ross’ presentation yesterday at a conference that I attended.
Many of these points have been mentioned before but it was good to hear Ross explain how they could have had a positive impact on his own career and also on his current (sort of) comeback.
He has said to me over the past year he just wants to get fit, but he’s now actually talking about getting back on the track, as he’s enjoying it, getting some consistency and getting faster again.

I rarely list performances from school matches as the times are very unofficial and unlikely to be totally accurate. However, James Kingston won the 800m in 1.57.8 here, which was his first ever sub two minute clocking.

Liz Weeks was first female home at this unusual race which incorporates the beach at Broadstairs I believe.

UK Youth Development League (u13/15) at Reading, Sunday 23rd June
Full results are on the Results 2019 page.
For those interested it's worth looking the results summary as there were some big pbs run by five athletes.
Albert Kreuzberg (u13) ran 2.11.5 which took 7.2s from his best and moved him to second in the UK. It's not that far away from Tom Kendrick's TAC age record of 2.09.4, although Tom was lost to the sport before developing to be a good senior.
Angus Currie, Ethan Rocks, Ella McIntyre and Tom Phillips all ran pbs, whilst others made their debuts at specific distances.
The team finished 4th again, so it looks like Premier Division status will be retained.

at The Brooks PR Invitational, at Seattle, USA, Saturday 15th June
James West ran 3.35.74 to break Andy Graffin's TAC record that had stood since 2001.
The time is inside the World Championships qualifying time of 3.36.00, although that maybe the easiest part of the task in qualifying for Doha. The 1500m is loaded with Brits including Jake Wightman, Chris O'Hare, Charlie Grice, Josh Kerr (who broke Steve Cram's GB under 23 record in winning James' race, plus Neil Gourlay, who also achieved the world standard.
James is due back in the UK in July and will be racing the Anniversary Games mile. His return to top form follows a spell of battling adversity, with an achilles problem, racing below par in the indoor championships and then getting disqualified for a false start at the outdoor regional championships ! He's at the University of Oregon.

Watford Open Meeting and British Milers Club Gold Standard races, Wednesday 12th June

Although it was a wet and cool evening, with continual drizzle, at least the wind wasn't present. However, the first race featuring TAC athletes was a bit of a disaster, producing two 'did not finishes' from Dom Brown and Miles Weatherseed (no injuries, just difficult race build ups). From then on it picked up as Cameron Payas ran 1500m to run 3.52.87, which was a pb by 4.4s.
In the open 800m races Sophie Slack (u15) ran a pb of 2.31.85 and Lily Slack (u13) 2.20.99, which was again a fraction outside the club age record. Harry Paton continued a return from injury, recording 2.08.06, in race 11, for a big season's best, whilst in race 15 Toby Emm set a pb of 1.58.25, the second time that he had broken two minutes.

James Pigot in Australia
Many from TAC will know James Pigot, a long time club member. James qualified as a doctor and is currently working in Australia until next year. I have received this update from him -
Hello Mark
Apologies for the very long silence from my end, but I'm settling in well to life down under in Adelaide, Australia.
Doing lots of night shifts and weekends, so not ideal for proper training, but trying to get out when I can.
I've joined a local athletic club called Flinders AC, who have some very strong runners, including a twenty three year old 28m45 10,000m runner.
It's quite similar to TAC with similar style intervals done on the grass cricket/aussie rules football pitch.
Unbelievably Adelaide only has one proper athletic track for the entire city!
Did the Great Southern Half marathon on Sunday, after finishing night shifts, down on the coast at a place called Aldinga - came 19th out of 431 (photo attached).
It was a slow time (1h 29m 28) but around 4 miles of it was run on the sandy beach with a strong breeze, which made it hard work!
The winner is a 70 minute HM runner but "only" completed the course in 76 minutes.
I've enjoyed keeping up to date with all the race results and photos on the tac distance runners website and wish everyone at the club the best of luck for racing this summer.
Best wishes
James
