Watford Open Meeting, Wednesday 21st August
Race Videos now loaded !
Despite it being the tail end of the track season we had five personal bests from the eight TAC distance runners competing at Watford. Some of them have really started to perform at their best and still feel that they can run even faster. Certainly the windless and warm conditions at Watford helped.
George Bourne (4.25.06) and Jordan Saul (4.26.61) started the ball rolling with personal bests over 1500m of nine and six seconds, respectively, running in race ten of the sixteen races.
James Pigot followed up with a five second pb of 4.04.76 in race 14, whilst James West and Henry Pearce went in the final 1500 metres. Westy pushed the pace on as nobody else wanted to lead, but still ran a faster second half and was just beaten into second place at the finish. He ran a superb pb of 3.51.84 to be ranked fourth on the TAC 2013 list. Henry once again struggled, as he searches to regain his best form.
We had three athletes in the 3000m, with Corey De'Ath tracking the small lead pack from the start and giving it a real go, following his terrific 1500m pb of last week. He hung onto them as they reached the last kilometre, but then found it very tough. At the end he was just a couple of seconds outside his best with 8.38.06. Alex Howard (8.47.21) knocked an incredible 29 seconds from his best to put a claim in as one of the club's most improved runners in the last year. Dan Bradley (8.49.70) was just behind, missing his pb by a second, but running a seasons best.

He also missed George Duggan's Tonbridge under 15 record by 0.24 seconds, but has another year in the age group !
The second outstanding performance came from Kieran Reilly, over 3000 metres, running 8.15.33, to take more than nine seconds from his best ever time and record the fastest by any TAC athlete this century.
Ryan Driscoll became the 11th TAC athlete to run under 4 minutes for 1500m this season and there were also pbs for Toby Ralph, James Williamson, Will Whitmore, Jesse Magorrian and Sam Avis. Photo below of most of the TAC squad at Watford.

There were 11 pbs and 2 seasons bests produced by the 19 TAC distance runners in action tonight. Summary results are on the Results 2013 page.
Kieran Reilly was the quickest of our 800m runners, just missing a win in the BMC mens A race and a pb by a fraction of a second with 1.52.48. Luca Russo gave it all he had to run a 1500m pb, but again was a fraction of a second short with 3.53.00.
Perhaps the evening was most memorable from some breakthrough performances from quite a few. Tom Cox won the BMC 800m B race in 1.54.56, to smash his best, having struggled a bit in recent races. Billy Somogyi (1.55.21) and Ryan Driscoll (1.58.47) both ran pbs, whilst Alex Hookway (1.59.35) was back under 2 minutes for the first time in two years, having missed 2012.
The ever improving James Williamson (2.00.65) ran a four second pb and perhaps the most surprising run was that of James Pigot (2.01.11), who broke his pb that went back to 2008 !
Ben Murphy looks like he can go even quicker than his pb run here of 2.07.35, as he front ran and won his race and Alice Wood ran a season's best of 2.22.48.
Over 1500 metres there was a win for Alex Howard in the BMC B race with a pb of 4.04.51.
Finally, prolific racer, Dan Watt, took 18 seconds from his 3000m best with 9.22.19, following on from a half marathon on Sunday. Photo below - Ryan Driscoll, one of the many who ran a pb.

Tonbridge AC Evening Open Meeting, Tuesday 2nd July
Videos loaded and results summary on the Results 2013 page !
It was quite a day for Kathleen Faes, as after winning a national schools 1500m title she was back at Tonbridge later in the day and running a mile in 5.22.35 to set a TAC under 13 record. We also thought that Sophie Foreman had broken the club u20 record with 5.10.55, but have found that Ruth Bourne ran 5.09.31 as an under 17.
Other highlights of the evening were some excellent 400m times being recorded by distance runners, with Tom Cox leading the way in 51.86 and Becky O'Hara, just missing her own under 15 club record with 59.62.
Father and son, Steve and Ben Brooks ended up as 1-1 in their head to heads over 400m and 200m, whilst Duncan Ralph slashed 21 seconds from the mile time that he set earlier in the season. Photo below of Tom Cox, Dan Bradley and Alex Hookway. Tom and Dan were the fastest 400m and miler on the night.

British Milers Club Grand Prix Meeting, at Watford, Sunday 30th June
Videos of races now loaded !
Five TAC distance runners competed in this top quality meeting at Watford.
Sean Molloy was having one last effort to try and run the 1.49 qualifying time that would perhaps enable his selection for the European under 20 championships. Despite an excellent run and a season's best time he couldn't quite do it and ran 1.49.15. Sean produced a very strong final 150 metres, coming from the back of the field and was closing down on the leaders all the way to the line. However, it was a very encouraging performance, which will hopefully mean he continues to develop his season.
Steve Fennell was another who finished extremely strongly with a remarkable last lap that resulted in a new 1500m personal best of 3.45.75. Hopefully, this will encourage Steve to string a few more races together.
Kieran Reilly was another who ran a 1500m pb, moving it from 3.47.17 to 3.45.99, the significance of which is that it is a qualifying time for the UK World Championships trials, at Birmingham in a couple of weeks' time. Hopefully, Steve and Sean will join Kieran there, as all three have qualified.
Luca Russo and Tom Cox were in the same 1500m race and whilst Luca ran a superb race (3.52.89), missing his pb by a tenth of a second, Tom did not feel great and stepped off the track, as he trailed at the back of the field.

Sollentuna Grand Prix, at Stockholm, Sweden, Thursday 27th June
After recently finishing second in the National under 20 men's 800 metres championships Sean Molloy was hoping to run the sub 1.49 time that he required, in order to be considered for the GB team, for the European Championships. With some assistance he was invited to this meeting in Stockholm, Sweden to race in the 800 metres B race.
Unfortunately Sean was outside the time that he needed with 1.51.46, but nevertheless the opportunity to race abroad at an event like this will hopefully be a useful experience for the future.

Watford Open Meeting, Wednesday 26th June
Videos of races now loaded !
A dozen TAC distance runners competed at Watford, on a warm and still Summer evening, that incorporated twenty 1500m races and two 3000m races.
The TAC action didn't start until race 12 of the 1500s (slowest races go first at Watford) with Stuart Brown smashing his personal best with 4.22.78. In total there were 8 pbs and 2 seasonal bests. One of the latter came from Graeme Saker, who set a Tonbridge AC Club over 50 men's 3000 metres record of 9.39.35.
Perhaps the most stunning performance of the evening came from Tom Kendrick, who sliced another six seconds from his best in recording 4.11.41, whilst still in year 8 at school. TKs time is just three seconds away from George Duggan's TAC club under 15 record, which was achieved a couple of years ago, when winning the English Schools title at Gateshead. George was as a year 9 then though.
Interestingly Tom's time is not the fastest ever by a TAC thirteen year old, as Kurt Wolfe ran 4.10.90, just before his 13th birthday, back in 2005, when he won a bronze medal at the English Schools Championships.
Amongst the other highlights were two exciting wins from Ryan Driscoll and Charlie Joslin-Allen, plus a 3000 metres from Chris Olley, who took a massive 70 seconds from his two year old 3000 metres pb.
Summary results are on the Results 2013 page.

Crawley Open Meeting, Wednesday 26th June
Dan Bradley and Alex Hookway competed in the same race over 800 metres at Crawley, with Dan finishing ahead of Alex. Their times were 1.58.99 and 2.00.73, which were both seasons bests and shows that they are both on the up, despite starting their track seasons relatively late. In Dan's case he was just 0.3 seconds away from his personal best.

South of England Under 20 and Senior Championships, at Watford, Sunday 23rd June - Day 2
Max Nicholls made his 5000 metres debut in the combined under and senior race and was the first u20 home, to win the championship. In blustery conditions his 15.24.49 was excellent.
The only other TAC distance runners in action were in the under 20 men's 1500 metres and it was a disappointing result as Dominic Brown, James West and Alex Howard finished 8th, 9th and 10th.
Even more disappointing was that my video camcorder was left 'on' in the car on the way to Watford and the battery was flat by the time I arrived at Watford ! Photos - including Max Nicholls winner of under 20, 5000 metres.

South of England Under 20 and Senior Championships, at Watford, Saturday 22nd June - Day 1
TAC distance runners won two medals on day 1 of the championships.
Nicole Taylor won the under 20 women's 3000 metres steeplechase in 11.25.10 in her first attempt at the distance. This set a new TAC record, since it appears no other female from the club has ever completed a 3k 'chase !
Sophie Foreman returned to her best form to take silver in the 1500 metres and was very close to her personal best with 4.41.48.
The only other TAC athletes in action were the four under 20 men in the 1500 metres. Dom Brown, James West and Alex Howard all qualified for Sunday's final, but a below par Corey De'Ath missed out. For Alex Howard his 4.07.05 was a huge personal best by more than six seconds !

Ryan was making his season debut on the track, after a spell of injury and ran 3000m in 8.48.73. Luca meanwhile got caught up in a very classy 1500m and ran his second fastest ever 1500m of 3.54.60, despite a tough last lap.

British Milers Club and Cambridge Harriers Meeting, at Eltham, Wednesday 19th June

Fifteen TAC athletes were in action tonight and ten of them ran personal bests. Amongst the signifcant barriers broken were Becky O'Hara running 59.46 for 400 metres to break 60 seconds in only her second race at the distance. It is also a Tonbridge AC club under 15 record.
Laurie Probert was one athlete to break the 2 minute barrier for 800 metres, whilst there was a whole range of pbs from many others.
What was particularly pleasing was that a few athletes have battled away in the last year or so and are now making real progress again with their times. This includes Saffron Salih, Billy Somogyi, Tim Faes and others. These athletes in particular deserve great credit.
A results summary is available on the Results 2013 page.

National under 20 and 23 championships at Bedford, Sunday 16th June - Day 2
(Videos now loaded !)
TAC had five athletes competing in today's finals, with the following results -
Under 20 men - 800m Sean Molloy 2nd, 1500m Charlie Joslin-Allen 9th
Under 23 men - 1500m Kieran Reilly 7th, Luca Russo 11th
Under 20 women - 3000m Sophie Foreman 10th
As many will see on the video of the race, Sean Molloy came so close to not only winning the National title, but also running the qualifying time for the European under 20 championships. As it was he beat two of the three athletes, who had run the standard this season, but just lost out to Jordan Bransberg over the last 20 metres.
Also worthy of a mention is Luca who didn't just accept being an also ran in a final, that he didn't expect to make. Rather than allow the final to develop into a slow tactical affair he hit the front early and gave it all he can. Ok, so he slowed on teh final lap, but comes away from these championships having tried something and given it a real go. The experience will hopefully be so useful for the future. Photos below from today with the first one of Luca taking it out in the under 23 mens 1500m final.

Additional new TAC shelter arrives
Many thanks to the Tonbridge AC committee who authorised the purchase of an additional TAC shelter, which has just arrived.
The extra shelter replaces the very old one and will give that extra capacity if needed at major championships. It also takes up less space for transportation, so will be a useful addition on occasions.

Of the 14 TAC athletes in action at Watford, 10 returned home with new personal best times over either 1500m or 3000m.
It was particularly good to see Sam Avis and Sam Crick break five minutes for the 1500m for the first time, whilst Euan Nicholls produced one of his best ever track performances, reducing his pb by eight seconds.
Conditions were surprisingly good, considering all the rain that we have had and remained dry and still throughout the evening.

Kent Championships, at Ashford, Sunday 26th May - Day 2
(Summary results are available on the Results 2013 page)
The only TAC middle distance win today came from Tom Kendrick in the under 15 boys' 800m, but there were a few who came very close such as Hannah Czarnowski, who led the u17 800m only a few metres from the line. Billy Somogyi, who is second claim TAC won the under 20 2000m steeplechase from Alex Howard. Both James West and Corey De'Ath were involved in a three way fight to the line in the under 20, 1500 metres, before Adam Gilbert of Medway and Maidstone snatched the win.

Kent Championships at Ashford, Saturday 25th May - Day 1
(summary results on the Results 2013 page and videos loaded)
As is often the case at Ashford there was a strong wind facing athletes in the back straight and whilst many of the sprints were wind assisted, it made it hard work for any front running distance runners.
TAC claimed two winners in the middle distance events on day 1 of the championships with Sean Molloy (under 20 800m) and Alasdair Kinloch (under 15 1500m) emerging victorious.
Four athletes lowered their personal bests, amongst them Dominic Brown who ran 3.54.07 in the senior men's 1500m, in perhaps the race of the day. Dom had the same time as the winner, but was not given the verdict. James West ran 1.55.47 for 4th in an excellent under 20 men's 800m final, which was a pb, in a race where Sean won, with Charlie Joslin-Allen 2nd.
The other two pbs came in the under 17 men's 1500m where Toby Ralph slashed a massive 18 seconds from his best to win bronze and Will Whitmore trimmed his best ever time in finishing 6th.
Photos - Dominic Brown could not get any closer to a win, whilst Sean Molloy and Alasdair Kinloch seal their championship victories.

Ben Foreman ran 2.02.26, whilst Billy Somogyi (2nd claim TAC) ran the second half of the B race on his own and was only just short of his pb, winning in 1.58.52. It was a season's best though. Sittingbourne 10k Road Race, Sunday 19th May
Well I suppose it is a positive when a coach suggests going out for a Sunday run, the morning after a fast 800 metres and the athlete goes ahead and does it. However, Sean Molloy is not your typical athlete. He had run 1.49 for 800 metres on Saturday evening, but when his training mate Jordan Saul suggested doing the Sittingbourne 10k, Sean grabbed his gear and dashed out of the house to register !
Sean placed 3rd in 35.53 on his debut at the distance and said it was easier running with other people, rather than doing a run on his own. Jordan also made his 10k debut and was 22nd of 320 finishers in 39.42. Finishing as second lady was Alice Heather-Hayes (2nd claim TAC), who sliced 22 seconds from her pb with 38.09.

British Milers Club Grand Prix Meeting, at Solihull, Saturday 18th May
It was a sign of progress within TAC that we had eight athletes at this top level meeting, that requires very good pbs in order to compete. The top performance came from George Duggan, who lowered Darren Neale's 30 year old unbder 17 club 1500 metres record to 3.52.48. George put everything that he had into the race and was rewarded with the ime, which is also very close to the World Youths Championships, GB qualifying time of 3.51.
Also stepping up his performance level for the season, was Sean Molloy, who ran his second fastest ever 800m with 1.49.35. He was in 7th place in the A-race, but just 0.42 seconds away from the winner James Shane ! Sean was also tantalisingly close to the European under 20 championships, GB time of 1.49.
PBs were recorded at 1500m by Kieran Reilly (3.47.17), James West (3.56.43) and Corey De'Ath (4.00.27), whilst Charlie Joslin-Allen ran an excellent 1.54.53 for 800 metres, which is pretty quick for someone who was second at the English Schools Cross Country Championships, a couple of months ago !

Watford Open Meeting and British Milers Club races, Wednesday 15th May
It was quite a dramatic night at Watford and full of surprises !
First of all somehow the weather cleared to be dry and calm, whilst the M25 traffic through Dartford was also very quiet. However, this was the calm before the storm.
In the first British Milers Club race of the night Sean Molloy faced some very strong opposition and after 550m received a nudge, as he and the eventual winner Ben Waterman made their move. Unfortunately for Sean he reacted by pulling over and dropping out of the race. It was not long though before he gathered himself and determined to race the open 800m later in the evening. He came back, won the fastest race in his fastest time of the year and front ran it all the way. He also led George Duggan to a big personal best as they finished 1-2.
In total from 13 TAC athletes there were 10 pbs, with James West and Sian Driscoll only missing theirs by a fraction of a second. After the drama of that first race it had turned into one of the best TAC nights we have had at Watford.

Tuesday night provided terrific conditions for racing at the first evening open meeting of the season, with still, warm and dry conditions. There were 75 TAC competitors in just the 800s and 1500s, so it was also an excellent turnout. The fastests times of the evening came from Sean Molloy (1.54.09) and Sophie Foreman (2.18.86) at 800m and Alex Howard (4.14.52) and Sally Palmer (5.43.58). Sally at just 11 years old was competing in her first under 13 race. George Duggan finished second behind Sean and ran 1.55.12, which puts him top of the early season UK under 17, 800 metres rankings.

Perfect conditions greeted the distance runners at Watford, with slightly warmer, still weather helping produce some excellent performances. There were 15 races in total at 1500 metres and Sam Avis started the TAC action in race 4, slicing more than 20 seconds from his pb. Chris Olley was equally impressive with a best of 4.06.74, to take 10 seconds from his previous time.
In the final 1500m race of the night TAC had three athletes competing and all ran very well, with Kieran Reilly (3.52.05) and Luca Russo (3.55.61) both demonstrating that they are in form to lower their pbs this year. Between them Tom Cox moved to another performance level with a six second pb of 3.53.53.
Perhaps the best performances of the night came in the 3000 metres races. Sophie Foreman was in the first of three races and was helped by brother Ben, who also ran and pushed the pace along beside her. Sophie smashed her best ever time by 22 seconds with 9.56.74. Then in the final race of the night Corey De'Ath attacked the English Schools Qualifying time of 8.36, dipping just inside with 8.35.79, a pb by 14 seconds. Robbie Farnham-Rose ran the second leg in Alabama University's 4x800 metres relay at this prestigious meeting, infront of a crowd of more than 12,000. There were nine teams in the race and Robbie took over in last, before bringing them to the changeover in first. He ran a low 1.50 or maybe high 1.49 leg, which in cool and windy conditions, plus running wide to overtake the others bodes well for his next race. The team eventually finished sixth.

Watford Open Meeting, Wednesday 17th April

It was a cold and very windy evening at Watford, with the meeting likely to be remembered as the one where the floodlights went out at 10pm. Normally this would not be a big issue but on this occasion it was soon after the start of the last race of the night over 3000 metres. I am still not sure how so many athletes kept going in the darkness, although one or two did drop out.
Amongst those that completed the 3000 metres was Charlie Joslin-Allen who ran a personal best and an English Schools qualifying time of 8.34 (my timing and official one awaited).
All the other TAC athletes present raced 800 metres -
Calum Lain 2.37.04, Charlie Crick 2.19.84 (0.2s off pb), Jordan Saul 2.12.17, Tom Kendrick 2.06.74 (pb), Chris Olley 2.05.21 (pb), Billy Somogyi (around 2.04), Kieran Reilly (time awaited but believe around 1.56) and Sean Molloy 1.52.14.

Boston Marathon, Monday 15th April
John Harley ran 3.21.16 at the Boston Marathon, but more importantly he and his wife are safe. The bomb explosions went off after they had returned to his hotel. John had been on schedule to beat his club over 60 record but a bout of severe cramp in the last 5k.
National Young Athletes Road Relays Championships, at Sutton Coldfield, Sunday 14th April
It was another good day for Tonbridge AC at these championships. The teams finished as follows -
Under 13 Girls 12th (B team 25th)
Under 13 Boys 1st (B team 11th, C team 20th)
Under 15 Girls 18th (B team 29th)
Under 15 Boys 2nd (B team 11th, C team 26th)
Under 17 Women 5th
Under 17 Men 4th (B team 13th)
The win from the under 13 boys was only the fourth from a TAC team at the event this century, which shows how competitive these relays are. Jesse Magorrian, on his debut for the club, ran the third fastest lap, but huge credit should go to the B-team first leg athlete, James Puxty, who was fourth fastest overall. James had only arrived back from a trip to Australia aswell !
Perhaps one of the best runs of the day came from Peter Mills in the under 17 men's race, who was well inside the time that we might have expected him to run.
Club debuts were made by Alice and Clara Tyler in the under 13 race.

National 12 Stage Road Relay Championships, at Sutton Coldfield, Saturday 13th April
The Tonbridge AC senior men's team produced a superb result to finish 15th in the National Championships, four places higher than last year and the best performance in club history. The championships also incorporated the South of England event that had been postponed in March. Tonbridge were sixth in this, again our best ever result. Not one of the twelve athletes had a disaster and the consistency ensured that the team progressed throughout the four hour plus race.

Tonbridge AC, Norman Fowler Memorial, Easter Open Meeting, Monday 1st April
Every conversation today seemed to start with the weather, which was very cold and windy. The conditions made fast times generally out of the question, but there were some excellent races and a good attendance. Well done to everyone who competed, which was for most a season opener on the track.
I have managed to put together full results for the 300m, 600m, mile and 3000m/5000m and they appear on the Results 2013 page. Photos below of some of the action.
