Training at Knole Park, Sevenoaks, Saturday 31st December
It was good to see about sixty TAC distance runners at Knole Park for the New Years Eve hill session. We also had a 'visitor' with Mark Scrutton joining us (not doing the hills though). Mark is the TAC club record holder at 3000m, 5000m and 10,000m plus some road distances like 10miles. He also won the NCAA cross country and indoor 2 miles totles, in the USA.

Was Thursday 30th December the coldest training night so far, this Winter ?
It was good to see all the distance running groups training in the freezing conditions on Thursday night. Hopefully, those who have been putting in the work over the Christmas period will reap the rewards.
Sometimes I tend to give all the credit to the athletes on this web site, so I thought it was time to recognise what the volunteer coaches and helpers do. Bill Mutler epitomises the TAC spirit and was out time keeping our group in the freezing fog, despite being into his 80s !

Tonbridge Athletic Club had twenty one runners in action at the South of England Inter Counties Cross Country Championships, at Oxford, on Saturday and they faced the worst of the Winter conditions so far. Continuous rain during the day made the park and woodland course quite muddy in places, testing the athletes across the age groups.
Phoebe Barker came closest, of the Tonbridge athletes, to an individual win, as she battled throughout the under 17 race, with Khahisa Mhlanga of Essex. Phoebe finished just three seconds down, but was well clear of the third placed runner, as ninety finished. Barker’s run helped Kent to the team title.
Also in the under 17 age group James Puxty (5th) and Bede Pitcairn-Knowles (8th) finished in the top ten, whilst Dan Seagrove (27th) also scored for the Kent team, that finished fourth.
Maddie Wise was the second Kent scorer in the under 13 girls’ race, as the county won the silver medals, whilst Fin Croll (10th) and Matthew Taylor (12th) helped Kent secure the bronze medals in the boys’ race, at the same age group.
Nicole Taylor was 12th in a closely contested senior women’s event, as she helped Sussex to silver medals.
Katie Goodge (22nd) scored for the under 15 girls’ Kent team that finished in third place, whilst Lucy Thompson (25th), helped the under 20s to silver medals.
Fraser Gordon was the only Tonbridge runner in the under 15 boys’ event and finished 28th, as Kent won the team title.
Alongside the inter counties event, the South of England veterans championships were held. Tonbridge had a team in the over 50s race, where they finished 11th of 22. Phil Coleman (52nd), Alan Buckle (3rd) and Andy Wood (69th) scored, as 169 finished.

Tonbridge AC Winter Parkrun Grand Prix update after 3rd December
With a relatively low TAC turn out top score available on the day was 14, which was snapped up by Sophy Slack, as she looks to claim the title for the 3rd time running. The top 3 are unchanged as Andrew Mercer and Anne Brenchley were busy winning medals at the Kent Vets XC championships. However Angus Tosh leapt up to 4th place and is the only athlete to have completed 3 races. Huxley Crush was also another big mover with a scoring PB bonus on the day. Eva Kolivoskova-Martin was making her postnatal return and will be one to be moving up the score board.
The next run to count will be New Year’s Day at Tonbridge, at 10am.

British Cross Challenge and European Cross Country Championship Trials, Sefton Park, Liverpool
Saturday 26th November

TAC had 22 runners in five of the races, with thirteen starting the men's race. The under 20 and senior races were trials for the Great Britain teams for the European Championships, on 11th December, in Sardinia, Italy. GB take u20, u23 and senior teams to the championships.
Phoebe Barker had a superb race to place 9th overall in the combined u17/20 women's race and was third under 17 home. Phoebe was just six seconds away from a top six slot, which may have given her a chance of GB selection. However, hopefully an international call up will not be too far away.
Tom Holden will hope to gain an England team selection, having placed 10th in the under 20 mens race.
It was good to see two TAC senior ladies competing towards the front of such a strong race, as Ashley Gibson and Nicole Taylor placed 36th and 42nd. Nicole was 12th of the under 23s.
The senior men's race was a ferocious battle and for the first time in a while could be called truly world class at the front. Olympic 5000m sixth placer Andrew Butchart won. The TAC squad had a mixed bag of results, with the three travelling back from the USA in the week finding it tough. However, Chris Olley 21st, James West 25th and Corey De'Ath 32nd all had terrific races and were 5th, 7th and 9th of the under 23s.
Unfortunately, Chris Olley has only been named as first reserve for the GB team, so missed out by one second.

Aldershot Farnham and District Tragedy, Tuesday 8th November
I am writing to you all with a heavy heart after hearing of the tragedy that happened last night at Aldershot Farnham and District's training night.
The distance running group had been on their warm up run and were crossing at the traffic lights, opposite the fields where Aldershot have trained for years. A car tragically hit two of the Aldershot girls and killed them.
Many parents, coaches and other athletes were present and our thoughts are with the Aldershot club. I have messaged and spoken with a few there already and they have explained the nightmare.
The girls killed were Lucy Pygott and Stacey Burrows, both in the under 17 age group. Lucy had anchored the Aldershot girls team on Saturday at Mansfield, taking them from third to a victory, whilst Stacey anchored their B team.
At Tonbridge we take great care to try and keep everyone as safe as possible, but despite this we still rely on all runners, of all ages, being cautious.
Below is something that I have circulated before and I would really like everyone to read it again.
Please do all you can to stay safe in memory of Lucy and Stacey. This means both at TAC and in your own training.
Having said all of that, as one parent has already said to me, we should not be fearful, just sensible.
I am sure that you will all join me in offering our thoughts to all our friends at Aldershot.
Mark

World Masters Athletics Championships, in Perth, Australia
Ben Reynolds follows up his gold medal at 5000 metres, with a 10,000 metres silver
Ben Reynolds followed up his gold medal over 5000m to take silver in the over 50s, 10,000m. His time of 33.19.16 was just six seconds away from the winner from Kenya.
You can read Ben's report in the file below, which I think shows his competitiveness is still burning brightly and is why he can still race at such a high standard.
There is some video of the 5,000m here -

New Podcast Launched !
As there is an absence in the market for athletics based podcasts, four of us got together this week to try something new.
We have launched Trackside Podcast and the first episode is available here -
https://soundcloud.com/tracksidepod
Its also available for download via itunes at - https://t.co/81RB37TLhq
The idea is to simply air some commentary and views on topical subjects within our sport - athletics and distance running.
There is also a Twitter link at @tracksidepod
Hopefully, it will create a bit of interest and maybe evolve, but certainly we aim to give a bit of coverage to the sport and cement links to other clubs and personalities.
