Summary results on the Results 2019 page.

Conditions were possibly the worst that I can recall at Mansfield, slowing times by upto 90s on the 5km course and by 30/40s on the shortest, 2km course.

The quality of the races was extremely high and I honestly thought that we would struggle to get even one set of medals this year. However, Fraser Gordon brought the under 17 men's team home in third, after Alex Beeston and Matthew Taylor had gone before him.

I always look for some encouraging signs and certainly feel that with four to score in the new year championships, as opposed to three per team in most of the races here, we will fair better. There is a bit of depth in some of our squads.

In summary
Senior men 11th, B team 22nd, C team 58th (190 teams)
We had 4th B team and 3rd C team. They were all solid if not spectacular performances.
Senior women 15th, B team 47th (148 teams)
Like the men's team we were nowhere near full strength and again all of them had ran pretty much as we would hope.
Under 20 men 8th, 26th, 35th (59 teams)
A good overall squad performance, with having the third B and first C teams home. James Kingston and Will Beeston had particularly good runs on the first two legs for the A team.
Under 20 women 22nd (27 teams)
Of the three in the team Elizabeth Heslop had one of her best runs, whilst India Nicholson and Steph Puxty had solid (I keep using that word) performances.
Under 17 men 3rd, 46th (103 teams)
We had a dilemma in the week over the A team selection but put Fraser Gordon in after a disappointing run at the previous weekend's Kent League. He rose to the occasion and had a good run on the anchor leg to secure the only TAC medals of the day. Matthew Taylor showed once again how he loves the mud by running one of the fastest legs, despite being bottom of the age group
Under 17 women no team
Katie Goodge and Flora Currie had signed up to race, but unfortunately we couldn't find a third runner to justify an entry.
Under 15 boys 6th, 14th (C team), 15th (B team) 116 teams
Probably the most impressive overall squad performance, with so many of them running well and meaning we had three teams in the top fifteen of 116 starters ! We had the 2nd B team and 1st C team and can really look forward to the new year championships, with it being very difficult to predict the four scorers and with plenty of back-up. We even had Josh Prendergast missing who has run so well at the Kent Leagues recently.
Ed Coutts, Huxley Crush, Angus Currie and Isaac Arnott all had what you might call 'blinders' whilst all the others ran well.
Under 15 Girls 22nd (112 teams)
Olivia Breed returned to action having injured her foot in a freak accident a few months ago (a PA system speaker fell on her)
Under 13 boys 7th, 33rd (96 teams)
Almost all the under 13 boys were 'let loose' on the trip by their parents and I was impressed how they all mucked in and dealt with the whole experience. Albert Kreuzberg ran the 4th fastest of the 'longer' legs 2 and 3.
Under 13 girls 6th, 58th (104 teams)
Penny Horne had one of her best ever runs for the B team on leg one.  Hopefully, this indicates that with continued effort this team can also challenge in the new year championships. Lily Slack was 2nd fastest of the  'longer' legs 2 and 3.
Numbers
The only TAC record broken was having 42 male runners, which was one more than 2014.
It's the first time since 2007 that we have not won at least two team medals.

Olly Dunn qualifies as a Royal Marine commando

Olly Dunn has passed through a few years of application , training and testing to become a Royal Marine Commando. He credits the discipline he learnt with the club in helping get him there. Quite an achievement as the drop out rate of those that don't make it is significant.

Friday 18th October Update

Nuttycombe Invitational Cross Country Meeting, Wisconsin, USA
It was supposedly a relatively quiet weekend, but there were still quite a few events that had TAC distance runners participating.

The 'weekend' competition started on Friday with James West (Oregon) and George Duggan (Portland) racing in the Nuttycombe Invitational. Its one of the highest calibre races in the USA collegiate season, although neither James (58th) or George (207th) will be pleased with the result. They ran 24.21 and 25.43, respectively, for the 8km (5 mile race).
Full results are here - results.flotrack.org/XC-PTT.html?mid=1805

Update - George Duggan suffered an injury during the race, when his foot was trodden on. He's undergoing an assessment and hoping just badly bruised.

Kent Cross Country League, at Swanley Park, Swanley, 12th October
Videos loaded !

Full results are now on the Results 2019 page. There were five individual TAC winners -
Lily Slack (u13 girls), Sophie Slack (u15 girls), Josh Prendergast (u15 boys), Katie Goodge (u17 women), Alex Beeston (u17).

A few notes -
Overall total TAC starters = 129, which beats our old league record of 125. What's impressive is that all 129 finished aswell !
We had 4 who didn't start that I had listed to race.
44 senior men, including Maurice Marchant in the over 70s is a TAC league record.
17 senior women is equal to the most for the first league fixture, but just short of an outright record
Senior men won 6 and 12 to score
Senior women won 3 and 6 to score
Under 17 men had the first 5 home and were 1st team
Under 17 women 2nd team
Under 15 boys had 7 in top 12 and were 1st team. 19 starters was 2 short of the TAC league record.
Under 15 girls 2nd team
Under 13 boys 3rd team
Under 13 girls 2nd team

Individual 'star' performers -
For a variety of reasons I noticed the following, although suspect there are others who feel they did really well -
Under 13 girls - Isobella Barton and Ella Thomas made their debuts
Under 13 boys - 7 making TAC cross country debuts. Harrison Fraser, Daniel Jeddo and Thomas Halfhide all had particularly good races
Under 15 girls - Aimee Holdstock had possibly the best performance of all 129 TAC to finish 29th of 64, after a tough couple of years. Sophie Slack won with confidence and it was good to see Annabelle Hales run so well.
Under 15 boys - Charlie Ellison and Jacob Kemmitt had TAC cross country debuts. I gave ** to six of them and maybe other than Josh Predergast who won, Angus Currie performed above expectations.
Under 17 women - Amber Crush was awarded ** as she starts moving up the results board !
Senior women - Becky Morrish, who is building up to a marathon, impressed for third, whilst the likes of Chloe Bird, Alex Crockford and Tina Oldershaw came through difficult spells to race well. Also seeing Lisa Knight well up in 28th deserves a mention.
Senior men - I gave ** to James Kingston, Charlie Crick and Alex Sandberg, who are all u20s finishing high up and running at their best, whilst Adam Roeder continues to improve. It was also good to see a few making their debuts coping so well.

West Chester Mens Mile, Pennsylvania , USA, Thursday 8th August

Chris Olley finished 4th in the West Chester Elite Mens Mile on Thursday in 4.02.48.
It was a bit of a frustrating experience, with the race delayed an hour for a storm and then the main race pacer withdrawing soon beforehand. His splits were 61.65,61.34,61.69 and 57.81, showing that the prospect of a sub 4 mile disappeared before halfway.

British Athletics League Division 3, at Basingstoke, Saturday 3rd August
Videos loaded !

An epic league day for TAC with a win in the 4x400m relay at the end which decided what had been a tied match.
The final scores were TAC 398 to second placed Basingstoke's 396.
TAC promoted for the second year in a row, as division champions.

The distance runners played their part in what was one of the best TAC team performances that I have witnessed.

400m - Ben Murphy was 2nd in the B string with a 50.08 pb
800m - Sean Molloy (1.51.63) and Miles Weatherseed (1.55.65) both won their separate races.
1500m - Miles (3.59.56) came back after the 800m to get second in the 1500m, supported by James Kingston (4.05.29).
5000m - Kieran Reilly (14.53.70) and Ben Cole (14.56.35) took maximum points, controlling the second half of the race.
3000m steeplechase - Jamie Bryant (9.33.79 pb) and Michael Ellis (9.44.07) almost secured maximum points.
4x400m relay - Ben Murphy split 48.8 and Sean Molloy 48.5 as they helped set a club record of 3.16.38, with Jack Lennard and Lewis Collins
400m hurdles - Michael Ellis ran 66.84 in the A race.

A victory like this hinges on lots of small incidents, but James Kingston's burst over the final five metres of the 1500m, ahead of the Basingstoke athlete, was certainly one of these. A reversal and we would have lost the match !

Milton Keynes and Nottingham 5000m Nights, Saturday 27th July
Videos loaded from MK !

On Saturday evening there were two significant nights of 5000 metre races on, one at Nottingham and one at Milton Keynes. The latter featured the England Athletics Championships for men and women.

Milton Keynes
Nicole Taylor possibly topped all of her own and maybe every other TAC female distance running performance by taking third in a loaded women's championship race. Nicole ran 15.49.25, to improve her pb by 28.3s. This also broke the TAC club record, held by Lucy Reid by 20.7s. Lucy herself, coming back from injury, had her first track outing of the season to finish 12th in 16.30.40.

There was also an impressive run from Dom Brown, making his 5000m debut on the track, where he finished 8th in the men's race, in 14.06.22. This moves Dom straight in at number eight on the TAC all time list.
Full results are on the Results 2019 page.

Nottingham
Kiri Marsh ran 16.54.25 to become just the sixth TAC female to ever run under 17 minutes. Kiri improved her pb by 22.4s.

Watford Open Meeting, Wednesday 25th July 2019
Videos loaded !

There were just a couple of TAC distance runners in action at Watford.
Will Beeston (u20) made his debut at the distance with 8.48.34 and Luke Fisher improved his pb to 9.02.17, which was a 13.5s improvement.
The Watford opens have changed from the 'old days' as entries on the night are not now possible and online entries limited. This has not only reduced the number of runners, but means that the standard at the sharp end is a bit lower than in the past.

Anniversary Games, Sunday 21st July - James West
Mile in 3.56.79

James West raced the Emsley Carr Mile at the Anniversary Games on Sunday, at the London Olympic Stadium.
It shows how far he has come when disappointed with how he felt yet running 3.56.79 ! However, it was more the fact that two or three British rivals beat him, who he would have hoped to finish ahead of.
Having said that James only returned from USA earlier in the week and some adjustment is probably needed to feel at your best.
His time is ranked 67th on the British All Time List and for you old timers out there ahead of the likes of Ian McCafferty, Dave Clarke, Derek Ibbotson, Ian Stewart, Nick Rose etc
Having said that its still not a TAC club record, as that belongs to Andy Graffin at 3.55.42 set in 2001.

TAC finished fourth in the match, which secured fourth place in the league, to maintain Premier Division status.
Results are on the Results 2019 Page.
Although the only wins came from three Javelin throwers there were some good personal bests from the TAC distance runners. Josh Greeves (u13) ran 2.36.57 for 800m, reducing his personal best by 5.0s and David Barclay (u15) is knocking on the 5 minute 1500m door as he ran 5.00.08, for a 4.4s pb.

Stumptown Twilight Meeting, Portland, USA, Friday 19th July

Chris Olley won section 2 of the men's 1500 metres in Portland on Friday evening with a new personal best of 3.43.85.
Initially he was disappointed not to get into section, which was won by the reigning Olympic Champion, Matt Centrowitz in 3.39.08, but it turned out well and it was four seconds quicker than he had run this season.

Currently Chris is in the USA waiting to start work, post college, in San Francisco. This could be his last track race of the Summer, as there are so few races in the States at this time of the year and paperwork prevents him leaving and returning to start work in August. His immediate plans are a bit undecided, although at this stage competing in the British Championships looks unlikely.

Chris's time keeps him in 8th on the TAC all time 1500m list and moves him into the UK's top 30 this year.

It was good to see some of the distance runners making their debuts at certain events, plus setting pbs and season bests.
800m
The men's race was a good quality one with Kieran Reilly 2nd in 1.54.2, followed by Charlie Crick and a pb of 1.55.2. Both Will Beeston (2.01.1) and Adam Roeder (2.11.9) set pbs as non scorers. Annabel Carter (2.23.9) and Tilly Hall (2.26.7) ran the women's event.

Sunset Tour Meeting, Azusa, near Los Angeles, USA, Tuesday 9th July
Chris Olley 13.40 5000m and James West 3.37 1500m !

It was great to see two Tonbridge athletes line up in fields surrounded by some world class runners.

First up was James West in heat 1 of the elite men's 1500 metres and finishing 3rd in 3.37.78. The race didn't pan out quite as was hoped, as the target was the Olympic qualifying time of 3.35 and James will be frustrated. However, he mixed it with some top runners and did nudge Nick Willis a two time Olympic medal winner into fourth.

Then came the men's 5000 metres with Chris Olley and watching the race live I was worried at 3k, as he was off the back of the main field and looked to be struggling. However, he had paced it perfectly and was overtaking plenty of others in the final stages to finish 16th of 32 starters. His time of 13.40.35 was a personal best by 7.6s, which lifts him one place in the Tonbridge all time list to second behind Mark Scrutton's club record of 13.32.20, but now ahead of Allen Graffin at 13.41.42.

Chris will move to 6th on the current UK rankings.

Kent Young Athletes League at Ashford, Sunday 7th July

Results are on the Results 2019 page, including a summary for the distance runners. There were 10 racing and 6 ran pbs plus 2 made their event debuts.
I am going to mention Florence Hopkins in the under 13 girls' 1200m, as I noticed her battle around in the recent development meeting, to finish last in the mile (in race 2 of 3 in error, instead of the easiest race). However, she was back in action on Sunday making her debut at 1200m and beating people. So well done Flo for setting an example to many others ! (Hope she won't mind the mention)
Added to this some of the young athletes who ran their pbs have had struggles with form and it's always good to see people come through and run at their best once again.

UK Endurance Conference, Sunday 7th July, Kingston University - Ross Murray talk.

I took some notes from Ross’ presentation yesterday at a conference that I attended.

Many of these points have been mentioned before but it was good to hear Ross explain how they could have had a positive impact on his own career and also on his current (sort of) comeback.

He has said to me over the past year he just wants to get fit, but he’s now actually talking about getting back on the track, as he’s enjoying it, getting some consistency and getting faster again.

They scored 322 points to snatch victory in the final event of the day from the host club, Yeovil Olympiads, who scored 316, with Basingstoke on 312, Trafford on 308 and the other four clubs further back.

It all came down to the 4 x 400 metres relay, where the Tonbridge team of Jack Lennard, Dom Brown, Ben Murphy and Sean Molloy won in 3.22.82, with Yeovil finishing sixth in the race. This gave a ten-point swing in Tonbridge’s favour to win the match. The victory moved Tonbridge to the top of the division with one fixture remaining.

Once again the distance runners contributed well to the overall points score -
400m 4th A Sean Molloy , 2nd B Ben Murphy
800m 1st A Dom Brown, 1st B Ryan Driscoll
1500m 1st A Dom Brown, 2nd B James Kingston
5000m 1st A Ryan Driscoll, 1st B Jamie Goodge

There was an introductory 1500m steeplechase held over the women's height barriers. Alex Beeston (u17 men) won in 4.56.9, with Sophie Slack (u15) being the first of the girls. UK Youth Development League (u13/15) at Reading, Sunday 23rd June

Full results are on the Results 2019 page.
For those interested it's worth looking the results summary as there were some big pbs run by five athletes.
Albert Kreuzberg (u13) ran 2.11.5 which took 7.2s from his best and moved him to second in the UK. It's not that far away from Tom Kendrick's TAC age record of 2.09.4, although Tom was lost to the sport before developing to be a good senior.
Angus Currie, Ethan Rocks, Ella McIntyre and Tom Phillips all ran pbs, whilst others made their debuts at specific distances.
The team finished 4th again, so it looks like Premier Division status will be retained.

James West runs 1500m in 3.35.74 to break Andy Graffin's Tonbridge AC record
at The Brooks PR Invitational, at Seattle, USA, Saturday 15th June

James West ran 3.35.74 to break Andy Graffin's TAC record that had stood since 2001.

The time is inside the World Championships qualifying time of 3.36.00, although that maybe the easiest part of the task in qualifying for Doha. The 1500m is loaded with Brits including Jake Wightman, Chris O'Hare, Charlie Grice, Josh Kerr (who broke Steve Cram's GB under 23 record in winning James' race, plus Neil Gourlay, who also achieved the world standard.

James is due back in the UK in July and will be racing the Anniversary Games mile. His return to top form follows a spell of battling adversity, with an achilles problem, racing below par in the indoor championships and then getting disqualified for a false start at the outdoor regional championships ! He's at the University of Oregon.

Watford Open Meeting and British Milers Club Gold Standard races, Wednesday 12th June

Although it was a wet and cool evening, with continual drizzle, at least the wind wasn't present. However, the first race featuring TAC athletes was a bit of a disaster, producing two 'did not finishes' from Dom Brown and Miles Weatherseed (no injuries, just difficult race build ups). From then on it picked up as Cameron Payas ran 1500m to run 3.52.87, which was a pb by 4.4s.

In the open 800m races Sophie Slack (u15) ran a pb of 2.31.85 and Lily Slack (u13) 2.20.99, which was again a fraction outside the club age record. Harry Paton continued a return from injury, recording 2.08.06, in race 11, for a big season's best, whilst in race 15 Toby Emm set a pb of 1.58.25, the second time that he had broken two minutes.

Lily Slack set a league record of 2.22.0 in the under 13 girls' 800m, whilst it was particularly good to see Lily Stewart making a breakthrough to win the under 15 girls race over the same distance in 2.24.3.

Although not distance running, Albert Kreuzberg broke the TAC u13 boys 75m hurdles record with 12.1 and is now top of the current UK rankings. Not bad for a cross country runner !
