Anniversary Games, at the Olympic Stadium, London, Sunday 22nd July
James West ran a superb race at the Anniversary Games to finish 10th of 16 in a world class 1500m field.
James ran a new personal best of 3.36.59, which is not far away from Andy Graffin's club record of 3.35.97.
His time improved his best by 0.9 seconds and ranks him 6th on the UK list for 2018.
It moves James to 38th on the UK all time list and 12th on the UK all time under 23 list.
I thought that it might be worth writing a little bit more about James performance, as I am sure some would be interested.
Its been a few years since another TAC athlete reached this level at 1500 metres.
James is 22 years old and joined Tonbridge, from Medway and Maidstone in March 2012, when he was in the under 17 age group. His pbs for 800/1500/3000 at the time were 2.04/4.14/9.15. He has made steady progress ever since and apart from this 1500m has run 800m in 1.49.03, 3000 in 7.51.23 and 5000 in 13.52.29
His time was the second occasion this year that he had run inside the European Championships qualifying standard, of 3.37.50, although unfortunately the event is so strong in GB that he won’t be selected amongst the three that will go.
James attended Loughborough University for three years and is now currently one year through a two year Track scholarship at the University of Oregon, USA
His 1500m time is now 6th on the UK 2018 rankings and 38th all time (Farah, Cram, Coe and Ovett are the top 4).
He is ranked 12th on the UK all time under 23 list, which is headed by Steve Cram’s 3.33.66. This is a key point, as the comparison of the u23 list to the overall list shows that many of the GB top 1500m of all time progressed into their mid and late 20s. In other words there is every chance of developing further, beyond university, as many are still getting stronger physically. Remaining patient, consistent and hopefully injury free all play a big part.
Without embarrassing James too much I feel there are a few attributes that have helped him to get where he is. He is very focussed on what he is doing week in and week out with training ie he gets on with it, gets it done and rarely ever finds an excuse not to. He has generally (touch wood) had a good mix of training and avoided injuries. Then perhaps one attribute that particularly stands out is his attitude to adversity and set backs. He has had a few, as everyone does in their careers. Back in the Autumn he had some real disasters at cross country but maintained a determination that the training would pay off and he was getting stronger.
Then came the Summer and in the USA College system they have Conference, Regional and then National Championships. James would have been one of the favourites to make the National final but had a disastrous run in the Regional qualifiers and was eliminated very early in the process. Many would have felt sorry for themselves and even called it a day on their season, despite it only being June. He didn’t do this, ran a couple of more solid races in the States and then came home to the UK for the Summer. Again many don’t even try to prolong their season, when USA based, but James has, even running the 3000/800 double at the British League fixture, for Tonbridge, prior to this race at the weekend.
So there are a few lessons from James experience in getting to this stage -
A) You don’t have to be the best in the younger age groups to get to the highest level as a senior, even at under 17.
B) Patience, consistency and a long term view can really help.
C) How you react to adversity is often the biggest factor that divides the top athletes and others.
Hope that this is useful to some.

Watford Open Meeting, Wednesday 27th June
Videos loaded !
The Watford Open meetings have changed in terms of logistics this year, as entries are via online only and numbers are limited. Therefore, its really first come and first served in terms of entries and we are seeing a decline in the quality of the faster races as a result. Thats just a word of warning for those who might plan to race there.
Conditions on Wednesday night were pretty much perfect and the TAC group had a decent evening.
First up was Will Beeston having his first race at Watford and he won race 8 of the 1500s with a new personal best of 4.19.05, improving by four seconds.
Jamie Goodge ran 4.06.18 in race 11,with Cameron Payas 4.00.15 and James Puxty 4.04.40 in race 12.
Graeme Saker (M55) ran a seasons best in 3000m race 1, with 10.10.02. Dan Schofield (8.56.49) and James Kingston (8.56.51) had a battle in race 2, with Dan running a personal best. Then in the last race of the night Corey De'Ath reduced his pb by 0.3s to 8.21.23.

Big weekend of performances
I have spent Bank holiday Monday catching up with the wealth of TAC performances over the past few days. It hasn't just been about the distance runners either, as decathletes, throwers and sprinters have also performed well.
Its great to see the diversity of performances at the club and just hope a few people take the time to recognise what some athletes are doing.

Every Summer I try and highlight some of the TAC distance runners who have improved their personal bests in the past few days. I use www.thepowerof10.info for the research. However, not all results eg school, TAC development meetings etc will go onto Power of 10, so please excuse me if my research is a little flawed on occasions.

London Marathon, Sunday 22nd April
The last week in marathon running, with the Commonwealth Games and Boston, has been dominated by the weather and London was no exception in the end. It was warmer on the ground than forecasters had even indicated perhaps and there were few runners not affected by it. It can be a cruel event, as so much preparation goes into it, over many weeks, just for that one day. There were a few bright spots amongst a mass of supreme battles.
TAC had a significant group of runners taking part and all should be applauded for not only running today, but their training leading up to it. Here is what they did.
Ben Cole 2.32.19 placed 43rd in the 'non elite' race.
Julian Rendall 2.44.29 - TAC over 40 club record
Dan Watt 2.46.58
Maria Heslop 2.56.56 - pb by 1 second, TAC club record (1st ever sub 3 women's) and 1st in the over 50 age category race.
Matt Dennis 2.57.34 debut
Alan Buckle 3.16.34
James Winnifrith 3.20.44
Dan Blades 3.23.43 debut
Joe Watts 3.31.13 debut
Penny Pilbeam 3.35.27
Dan Crush 3.41.58
Nicky Slack - 6.34.49 debut
Henry Pearce - did not finish. Dropped out at 14 miles on debut. 72.01 at halfway

Watford Open Meeting, Wednesday 18th April
Videos loaded !
The second Watford Open Meeting of the season took place on Wednesday night and was the first this year to feature TAC distance runners. All four produced good 800m races, with one pb and the other three not far away from their personal bests.
Miles Weatherseed ran 1.53.21 (pb by 0.4s), Ben Murphy 1.53.99, Jamie Brown 2.00.47 and Toby Emm 2.01.46
This year at Watford entries to the open meetings are via online and in advance only. There are limits on numbers, so if you wish to race there you have to plan ahead.
Last nights 800m races reached the entry limit a few days before, whilst it seems that the meetings will retain their status as being the best opens, with 25 x 800m races at this one.

For the first time ever TAC not only got amongst the medals, but won the men's championship, with an excellent performance.
The team all performed very solidly, with no disasters, which across twelve runners is key.
The women, despite missing some key athletes, finished an excellent 22nd in their race, whilst Katie Goodge won the under 15 girls 5km race.
More details to follow but full results for the mens and women's championships are on the Results 2018 page.

Paddock Wood Half Marathon, Sunday 8th April
There were a mass of fast times at Paddock Wood, in which I imagine were good conditions with light rain, but mild.
TAC filled the ladies podium through 1st Lucy Reid 76.17, 2nd Nicole Taylor 77.16 and 3rd Maria Heslop 79.21
All three ran personal bests.
Maria moves from 10th to 2nd on the UK All Time over 50 rankings, behind the British record of 78.26
Lucy's time is the second fastest ever TAC time behind Miranda Heathcote's club record of 76.00 and I should imagine Nicole's time is the third fastest ever.
Julian Rendall was the first TAC male home in 20th with 72.13, which takes over a minute from his own TAC over 40 record.
Others - Dan Watt 73.09, Tony Bennett 80.03, James Pigot 81.21, Luke Reeves 86.17, James Winnifrith 88.25, Penny Pilbeam 90.12 and Duncan Ralph 1.43.05

Stanford Invitational Meeting, California, USA, Friday 30th March
Alex Howard and James West feature in TAC all time fastest runs
There were two breakthrough performances, at the Stanford Invite, by Tonbridge AC athletes.
Alex Howard finished 4th in Section 3 of the 3000m steeplechase in 8.56.78. This was a personal best by 9 seconds and Alex becomes the sixth TAC runner ever to break 9 minutes. Ryan Driscoll holds the record at 8.50.87 and is followed by Stuart Kirk, Dave Robertson and Andy Sharp, with Sam Bradley also sub 9.
James West moved to number 3 on the Tonbridge AC list with a 5000m in 13.52.29. James finished 3rd in Section 2 of the 5000m races. This was a nine second pb for James and his first sub 14 clocking. I believe only Mark Scrutton's club record and Allen Graffin at 13.40 (before his move to Belgrave Harriers) have run faster.
