James Pigot in Australia

Many from TAC will know James Pigot, a long time club member. James qualified as a doctor and is currently working in Australia until next year. I have received this update from him -

Hello Mark

Apologies for the very long silence from my end, but I'm settling in well to life down under in Adelaide, Australia.

Doing lots of night shifts and weekends, so not ideal for proper training, but trying to get out when I can.
I've joined a local athletic club called Flinders AC, who have some very strong runners, including a twenty three year old 28m45 10,000m runner.
It's quite similar to TAC with similar style intervals done on the grass cricket/aussie rules football pitch.
Unbelievably Adelaide only has one proper athletic track for the entire city!

Did the Great Southern Half marathon on Sunday, after finishing night shifts, down on the coast at a place called Aldinga - came 19th out of 431 (photo attached).

It was a slow time (1h 29m 28) but around 4 miles of it was run on the sandy beach with a strong breeze, which made it hard work!
The winner is a 70 minute HM runner but "only" completed the course in 76 minutes.

I've enjoyed keeping up to date with all the race results and photos on the tac distance runners website and wish everyone at the club the best of luck for racing this summer.

Best wishes

James
(I'll be returning from Australia around March 2020)

National Road Relay Championships, at Sutton Coldfield, Saturday 6th April
Videos loaded !

TAC had men's a women's teams at the championships, with the men the defending champions and the women never having made the top twenty before. The teams came away having finished 5th and 9th, after giving everything.

Last year the men won the championship, which was the first time we had made the top three. This year all three medallists ran a lot faster and raised the bar. A lot was going to plan as the team inched into the top five around halfway, but with strong teams to the fore we couldn't make much more progress, with a brief spell in fourth being the highest at any stage. Dom Brown (6th) and Kieran Reilly (10th) made the top ten overall on the short stage.

The women surpassed expectations with not only gaining TAC's first top 20 placing but the top 10 aswell !

Chris Olley runs 13.47.92 for 5000 metres at Stanford Invitational, in California, Friday 29th March

Chris Olley ran won of the fastest ever times by a TAC athlete over 5000 metres, in California, when he finished 5th in the Stanford Invitational on Friday evening. Chris was running in the colours of the University of San Francisco.
Full results are here - live.recordtiming.com/meets/2807/events/80259/results
The time was almost eight seconds quicker than Chris ran as a pb in last year's British Championships.
I think he may have gone to third place on the Tonbridge all time list behind Mark Scrutton's 13.32.20 record from 1982. Allen Graffin ran 13.41.42 in 2000 and 13.40.07 in 2001, but around that time left TAC. His brother Andy ran 13.53.60 as a TAC member, before going quicker in 2003, but by then the Graffin twins were members of Belgrave. James West has run 13.52.29 recently.

South of England Road Relay Championships, Milton Keynes, Sunday 24th March
Videos loaded !

The men were 6th and 34th, whilst the women were 21st.

Considering that the men ran about three minutes quicker than the winners last time the championship was held on the same course, it shows the standard of the race. It's fair to say that we and others were well beaten, by some very strong teams and we will need to up the game at the National in two weeks time.

Everyone gave it their best shot, both on the men's and women's side, but it wasn't good enough to fully challenge on this occasion. I hope that we can do so again in the future.

It was good to see Elle Baker back in action for the first time since the Autumn and despite her fears she ran the fifth fastest short lap in the women's race.

Ryan Driscoll and Ben Cole got amongst the top 25 fastest long legs and both Robbie Farnham-Rose and Sean Molloy did likewise on the short leg.

Ray Curtis

We have received the news that Ray Curtis passed away on Tuesday, after a short illness..

Many of today's TAC members won't know Ray but when some of us joined back in the 70s Ray had already been a key member of the club for many years.

He was a great club man who always had words of encouragement for us all, whilst also competing on the roads, cross country and at steeplechase.

He came down to the track a couple of Summers ago and is pictured below with myself and Pete Mason.

Rest in Peace Ray.

The funeral is at Tunbridge Wells Crematorium on Thursday 7th March at 2.30pm
