Tonbridge AC Development Meeting, Monday 31st August

At Tonbridge, on Monday, Ben Murphy won the fastest 800 metres in 1.51.92, from Miles Weatherseed who recorded a pb of 1.52.80 in second. James West had finished second in an 800 metres on Saturday, at Lee Valley in 1.49.29, in cold, wet and windy conditions and together with Reilly, Murphy Weatherseed and Sean Molloy, is due to compete in the British Championships. Of the female 800 metres runners Annabelle Hales and Lily Stewart, who are both under 17s, recorded personal bests of 2.21.23 and 2.21.57, respectively.
The standout 1500 metres performance, on Monday, was most probably the 4.10.96 clocking by Josh Prendergast, which moved him to second on the UK under 15 rankings. Sean Molloy won the fastest race in 3.57.10, from Jamie Goodge’s pb of 4.00.39. The latter’s sister Katie Goodge also ran a pb of 4.39.14. In the final track event, on Monday, Kieran Eland won the 400 metres in 49.73, a fraction away from his pb.

In total contrast to the past week the TAC performances were disappointing and the weather awful ! Results to come and videos being loaded. James West finished 2nd in the mens A 800 metres in 1.49.29, whilst Ben Murphy (800m), Miles Weatherseed (1500m) and Sean Molloy (1500m dnf) were all below par.

Mid Cheshire 5km road race, Friday 28th August
Ally Kinloch bounced back from what was a disappointing race on Tuesday to record a 6 second pb of 14.24 and finish 9th in this top quality road race.

Hercules Wimbledon 3000 metres night, Wednesday 26th August

There were eight 3000m races at Wimbledon in superb conditions, as the winds had dropped totally. There were two TAC runners in the fastest seeded race of the night and they produced a superb 1-2 result.
Kieran Reilly won in 8.17.3 with Steve Strange coming home in 8.18.0 and taking 28s from his pb ! Both ran around 60s for the final lap.

Alasdair Kinloch had his first race of the season, running 8.40.92 for 3000 metres, in wet and windy conditions.

Best Fit Today Track Academy Open Meeting, at Dagenham, Sunday 23rd August
Josh Prendergast (u15) convincingly won his 800m in 2.07.17. Josh’s time improved his best by almost six seconds from last year.

A number of TAC distance runners raced in this invitation meeting, organised by Mark Hookway, with plenty of help from some TAC and Blackheath volunteers.
Conditions at Bromley were not as bad as we thought they might be and there were some top class performances, from many internationals.
Amongst them were James West and Nicole Taylor. Nicole shaved 0.23s from her own TAC record with 9.12.18 to finish 3rd in the women's A race. Then James, in the final race of the night produced a 7.43.29 clocking to just be pipped on the line by Marc Scott. James' time was 3.9s better than his indoor best and was inside Mark Scrutton's previous club record outdoors.

Milton Keynes 5km road race, Friday 21st August 2020
Ben Cole ran 14.54 and won 'Wave E', whilst Steve Strange recorded a pb of 14.57 in Wave C' having never broken 16 minutes before.

Kieran Reilly (senior) finished 2nd in his 800 metres, when returning to his old university. In what was his opening track race of the Summer he recorded 1.53.61.

Current TAC position
The current situation at TAC is-
The track is available in a very restricted manner, with one coach being allowed to book use with five athletes, whilst maintaining social distancing.
A timetable of sessions is available to coaches, in order to book these centrally.
We are trying to protect track use at busy times (Tuesday/Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings) for more senior sprinters, hurdlers and field eventers.
There are no toilets available and we are told that there will not be until the centre is allowed to open.
The fields at Tonbridge School are not now available to TAC runners.
The current guidelines allow six people to meet, from different households, whilst remaining two metres apart.

Emily has volunteered her help at Maidstone hospital and is helping promote this event.
This is a charity event to raise funds for the NHS staff welfare system, providing physical and mental support.

The event doesn’t go fully live until 12th June.

Successfully transitioning through the age groups to become a senior athlete
I have wanted to have this type of discussion for some time, to try and utilise the experience of some others to explain the difficulties of transitioning from junior to senior athlete. Hopefully, Lucy, Nicole and Julie have provided not only an insight into what they had to deal with, but also have some thoughts that may help others.
Virtual National Road Relay, Saturday 4th April until Wednesday 8th April
More than 3700 runners took part, recording a 5k time with their GPS watch and logging it onto the Open Track system, alongside their Strava links or similar evidence.

Under 17s and younger can enter but will only show an individual time and not contribute to the 'relay' teams ie non scoring.
Note that the window for posting a time is Saturday 4th April until Wednesday 8th April.
Entry deadline is Friday 3rd April, before midnight. So far 33 TAC runners have registered.

Due to their being just a few entries he also won overall, as three counties were combined for the race.

British Masters Cross country Championships - from Maurice Marchant
I ran the BMAF cross-country champs in Corwen on 14/03/20. I did put a brief report on our Masters Fb page, i.e. that most others in my race for 65+ were significantly faster than me. I came 83rd male having battled for a while with the top 2 80+men.
Maurice was in the over 70 age group.

Surrey Half Marathon, Woking
I am not quite sure how he manages it but Ben Cole won the Surrey half marathon less than 24 hours after finishing 21st in the UK Inter Counties Cross Country Championships. Lucy Reid broke her own TAC half marathon record with 72.49 (pb by 58s) and Max Nicholls moved to 4th on the TAC all time list with 66.18 (pb by 1.29).

at Seattle, Saturday 29th February
George Duggan wins the men's mile and runs sub 4 !
George Duggan became the latest TAC athlete to run sub four for the mile, when he won the MPSF championship in 3.59.61.
By my calculations I think this moves him to third on the TAC all time list, behind Andy Graffin (3.55.42 in 2001) and James West (3.56.78 in 2019), with Allen Graffin (3.59.86) the fourth sub 4 man.

Boston University Indoor Meeting, USA, Friday 28th February
James West breaks TAC men's 800m record
James West came back on Friday to finish second over 800 metres in Boston, recording 1.48.67, to break his own TAC indoor record and set an outright personal best. Overall he is still behind Seam Molloy (1.47.76) and Steve Fennell (1.47.97), who have run quicker, albeit outdoors.

James West breaks NCAA 1500m record and goes 6th on UK all time list
James West ran 3.36.93 for 1500 metres to go top of the UK indoor rankings for 2020 and sixth on the UK all time list.
He also broke Edward Cheserek's National Collegiate record.
The race was set up to try and run the Olympic qualifying standard of 3.35, which Josh Thompson, the American indoor champion nanaged as he won in 3.34.77.

Police Sport UK National Cross Country Championships, at Thetford, Wednesday 26th February
Four TAC members raced in these championships, with Harry Paton placing third in the men's event.
We believe that Harry gains automatic qualification for the European Championships, being held in October in Belarus.
Elise Rendall was 2nd in the 40 to 45 age category.

In the men's 800 metres Sean Molloy finished second to Elliot Giles, as Sean reduced his season's best to 1.50.77 behind Elliot's track record of 1.47.76. Then in the 1500 metres Miles Weatherseed finished third in 3.50.21 which is an indoor best.
Steve Tester ran in one of the earlier 800 metre race and record a time around 2.05 (to be confirmed), whilst ex TAC member Toby Ralph ran 1.55.07 to finish second in the BMC B race.

Lucy Reid and Kieran Reilly pull on the England vests !
Both Lucy Reid and Kieran Reilly were selected to represent England teams on Sunday 2nd February.
Lucy finished second female at the Granollers Half Marathon in Spain, recording 73.59 and Kieran finished second over 1500 metres at the Reykjavik Games, in Iceland.

Sean Molloy and Ben Murphy won gold and silver in the senior men's championship, whilst Charlie Crick won a surprise bronze medal in the under 20 event, following a disqualification of an athlete in front.
Sean ran 1.51.93 to Ben's 1.53.26 in the final, whilst Charlie ran his fastest indoor time of 1.56.41 in the heats. Steve Strange missed out on a place in the senior men's final.

University of Washington Indoor Meeting, at Seattle, USA, Saturday 1st February
George Duggan won section 2 of the men's 3000 metres in 8.06.52. The last 1000m was around 2.34 so really picked up.
It was a pb for George, indoors or outdoors by more than eight seconds.
Chris Olley finished 5th in section 1 taking 1.3s from his pb with 7.56.34

James West helps Oregon break NCAA all time indoor DMR record, at Arkansas, Friday 31st January
James West ran 2.53.53 on the opening 1200m leg of the distance medley relay at Arkansas on Friday night and helped Oregon beak the National Collegiate record that had stood since 2008.
For those of you less familiar with the NCAA scene in the States the DMR is one of the traditional relays held and a main event at the National Championships.
