December 2015
End of year newsletter
As we are nearing the end of 2015 and also about halfway through the cross country season, I have put together a newsletter.
The prime aim is to highlight some thoughts, in terms of the development of young distance runners, but also publish some information that might be useful, especially to relatively new club members.
At the end I have attached a couple of articles that were published in Athletics Weekly in recent weeks.
The file is too large to email to everyone, but I hope that quite a few of you take the chance to have a read over the next few weeks.

TAC Boxing Day Handicap, Saturday 26th December
William McCarthy was the overall winner, from Pete Ebbage.
Fastest laps were recorded by Corey De'Ath and Kathleen Faes.
I cant recall a previous race which had such a mix of 'names' from the past making an appearance, alongside the current crop.
Individual times are on the Results 2015 page. Video loaded.

Merry Christmas to everyone at TAC and beyond
Despite the wind and the rain we had 78 runners turn out for Christmas Eve training at Knole Park. It was a record number for a single training session. Photo courtesy of Richard Owen. See Training completed for times.
TAC parkrun Grand Prix
Mark Pitcairn-Knowles has swapped the 1st January qualifying event from Bromley to Tonbridge, now that one is being staged at the 'home' event. This New Years Day run starts at 10.30am.
TAC Fantasy Cross Country League update
On the Fantasy Cross Country League page you will find a Christmas blog and analysis from Ian Crawley.
Of course the 'wild card' event of the Boxing Day handicap is looming, which could throw some completely different point scores into the mix. However, I am sure, like all races, it will be dependent of your teams' runners turning out.

South of Thames Championship, at The Schools at Somerhill, Saturday 19th December
Race video loaded !
Tonbridge AC men's team had a titanic battle with Kent AC today, but in the end missed out in the 6 to score championship, by 52 to 58 points. As a consolation good packing by the TAC squad meant that the 12 to score first place was secured. Our packing was so good that the 'B team' six finished 4th overall.
Max Nicholls battled it out with John Gilbert, for much of the race, but Gilbert pulled away to win on the final lap of three, over the 7.5 mile course. Max slipped to third as Steven Feroni, of Brighton, came through.
Nicole Taylor took silver in the women's race, being not far behind Amy Clements, of Kent AC, whilst Lucy Reid (4th) and Nicola Wilkinson (9th) were both high up. Unfortunately, with only five runners, the ladies could not complete a team.
Other TAC A-team men - 6th Ben Cole, 10th Robbie Farnham-Rose, 11th George Duggan, 13th Julian Rendall, 15th Dan Bradley. Full results are on the Results 2015 page.

New Tonbridge AC men's parkrun record and other parkrun news, Saturday 19th December
Chris Olley has broken the TAC men's outright parkrun record with a 15.03 clocking this morning at Fulham Palace. He also regained his own course record.
Simon Fraser, who is approaching his 40th birthday and full veteran status in 2016 ran 17.32 for 5th at York.
Tonbridge - 1st Steve Fennell 16.33, 1st female Ashley Gibson 18.03
Maidstone - 2nd female Pandora Banbury 22.48. To me this is probably the most pleasing result of the whole weekend, as Pandora is attempting to get back to proper running about three years after having to stop. A debilitating back condition makes it very difficult, but this time she took almost two minutes from her recent other Maidstone parkrun performances.

The big news for TAC is that Henry Pearce finished 12th in the senior mens race and 4th under 23, so gains automatic selection for the GB under 23 team, for the European Championships. Chris Olley also ran superbly to take 4th in the under 20 race and make the GB team. Both Henry and Chris will compete in France in two weeks time.
We also hope that Corey De'Ath will be selected for his first ever international vest, having placed 10th in the under 20 race. Similar past results have resulted in an England team selection.

In the senior women's race, Ashley Gibson returned to action, after recent injury, to take a commanding victory, being followed home by Chloe Bird, who produced her best ever result. In 18th Sasha Houghton showed her best form. As a result of the good performances TAC won both the three and six to score competitions on the day.
The under 17 and 20 men raced together, with a few more from the older age group present, since there was no senior men's race to choose this time. Alasdair Kinloch continued his unbeaten season, that includes anchoring TAC to two national relay titles. Stuart Brown was next home and first of the under 20s. TAC were quite dominant in both age groups.
The under 17 women lost Phoebe Barker, who stumbled, injured her ankle and withdrew, but still took the second team spot. It was particularly good to see Ellie Cohen making progress again.
Lizzie Miller took a decisive victory here in the under 15s, which meant that she also won the league title. The ever consistent Tilly Hall was 7th on the day, but won the third place league trophy. Further back there were a few TAC girls showing that they are on the up, such as Sally Palmer, Lucy Kingston and Maddy Crabb.
James Stoney captured the under 15 boys league title, by finishing second on the day.
The TAC under 13 boys were out in good numbers and produced a convincing win, led home by a fine second place, from Fin Croll. Relatively recent recruit, George Fisher, used the experience gained from the last fixture to improve to sixth here.
Katie Goodge took second on the day and the runners-up spot, in the under 13 league. Like the under 15 girls, there were a few who showed that they are getting stronger, as the season goes on, such as Maddie Wise and Angela Ward.

TAC Winter parkrun Grand Prix - update from Mark Pitcairn-Knowles
The 3rd round of Park run GP took place at Tonbridge on Saturday in “Snowy and Blustery” conditions!!! Despite this there was a good turn out of 23 runners, with Toby Emm taking top spot of 23 age graded points. The Slack sisters certainly do not 'slack', as they secured 2nd (Sophie) and 4th (Lily) spots separated by yours truly.
Sophie (45), Toby (44) and Lily (42) maintain a grip on the first three places overall, having opened a gap on Cain Bradley, who despite recent injuries still gained 15 points yesterday in conditions not ideal for someone feeling stiff!! It was not a day for PB’s as no one registered bonus points.
There is now a bit of a break until Bromley on 1st Jan (probably 10am) and Tonbridge 2nd Jan.

USA Regional Championships, Friday 13th November
All three of our current USA based runners competed for their universities in the Regional Cross Country Championships, on Friday.
Robbie Farnham-Rose (Alabama) placed 19th in the South Region Champs, held at his 'home' course in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Full results are at - http://results.flotrack.org/2015/11-13-NCAAD1S/Web/Results.php?EID=111&MID=901&D=1
This was a solid result for Robbie, who had struggled in recent weeks a little, but can now look forward to preparing for the indoor season.
Next up was Luca Russo (Missouri) who, in typical attacking style, 'went for it' in the Midwest Region Championships. Unfortunately it didnt come off and he ended up in 149th. Full results are at -

Finally, Ryan Driscoll (San Francisco) paced the West Region Championships very well, moving through the field, throughout the 10km to finish 41st (originally reported as 30th) and be the second scorer for the team. This was a good result for Ryan, in one of the strongest of all the regional championships.
